The Business Committee arranges the Assembly’s own business — the order and timing of debates, the length of sittings, and when legislative stages are scheduled. It is chaired by the Speaker and includes a member from each of the main parties represented in the Assembly, giving every party a say over how the schedule is set.
It does not scrutinise departments, ministers or legislation on its merits; its role is entirely procedural, keeping the Assembly’s own timetable running.
Who sits on it
The committee is chaired by the Speaker, Edwin Poots (Democratic Unionist Party). See the full membership on the committee’s page.
Data sources
Membership and chair data are drawn from the NI Assembly’s official committee records, kept up to date by the weekly Assembly sync.
